Maya Devi Temple is the exact spot where the founder of 'Buddhism' Lord Sakyamuni Buddha was born in around 563 BC and which was named after the Buddha's mother and Queen of Kapilvastu Kingdom "Maya Devi".This is the holy and important site located in the heart of Lumbini Garden, inside this temple there is a Marker stone which locates the exact birth spot and another Nativity sculpture which presents the birth scene of Prince Sidhartha with many other structural ruins in Lumbini. Just right to the temple, there is also a scared Pond called "Puskarni" where Prince Sidharth took his first bath and before giving birth Maya Devi- Buddha's mother also took bath on the same pond.
ASOKA PILLAR
In 249 BC when the Great Emperor of Maura Dynasty from India King Asoka visited Lumbini, he erected The Asoka Pillar to mark the birthplace of Lord Sakyamuni Buddha and to keep his visit memory alive. There is clear evidence of the birth of Buddha and visit of Asoka in the pillar written on Brahmi script and on Pali language. The original pillar was near about 40 ft long made up with the mixture of sandstone and sedimentary rock.
